In this lecture, the speaker will present a short history of Brazilian Popular Music starting from the instrumental choro, to the sung samba, to the encounter of Brazilian samba and American jazz culminating with bossa nova. They will discuss the lyrics and the music elements (rhythm, harmony, melody) in examples selected from artists including Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Elizete Cardoso, and others. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session and a music performance by Giuliana Fellini and Joao Mascarenhas.
