Introduction

PORTUFONE is an educational app designed to assist learners in mastering Portuguese as a second language, developed by Professor Shiro Iyanaga, Assistant Professor Eriko Muramatsu, and Associate Professor Gabriel Antunes de Araujo; and sponsored by the Higher Education Fund of the Macao SAR Government, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre of the University of Macau. The application is available in both Portuguese and Chinese versions, offering an improved user experience.

PORTUFONE aims to facilitate the acquisition of all Portuguese sounds by establishing a clear association between pronunciation and official orthography. Regardless of the learner’s preference for Brazilian or Portuguese variety, the app provides guidance in accurately connecting written forms to their corresponding sounds. Moreover, the entire content is conveniently presented in Chinese, ensuring accessibility for beginners.

The app comprises 23 meticulously designed lessons, each focusing on a specific aspect of the vocalic or consonantal system. These lessons include relevant examples from both Brazilian and Portuguese contexts, illustrating the relationship between sounds and orthographic representations.

PORTUFONE serves as a valuable tool for language learners, offering a scientifically grounded approach to acquiring fluency in Portuguese. Through its user-friendly interface and culturally adapted content, the app facilitates a transformative learning experience.
